Aggregation: your facility trades on the market as part of a large portfolio

We combine generation, energy storage systems and flexible consumption into an aggregated group and take on balance responsibility, trading and settlements — while participants earn revenue from their capacity and flexibility.

What is aggregation

Legal definition

“aggregation – an activity in the electricity market related to the pooling of electrical capacities (loads) or volumes of electricity generated (released) or consumed (withdrawn) by electrical installations for generation and/or consumption and/or energy storage, for the purpose of the purchase and sale of electricity (including balancing energy), the provision of ancillary services and/or flexibility services in the electricity market”Law of Ukraine "On the Electricity Market", Article 1(1)(3) (as amended by Law No. 4834-IX)
“aggregator – a market participant that carries out aggregation activity”; “aggregated group – electricity market participants whose electrical installations are part of an aggregation unit and who are aggregated by an aggregator”Ibid., Article 1(1)(2) and (4)

Under Article 30-2 of the Law, an aggregator is the balance responsible party for its aggregation units and is accountable to the transmission system operator (TSO) for the execution of schedules and dispatch instructions. An electrical installation may be part of only one aggregation unit; a consumer may join an aggregated group without the consent of its electricity supplier, and withdrawal from the group takes no more than 21 calendar days.

In plain terms

An aggregator is a “portfolio operator”

A single small facility finds it hard to trade on the DAM, forecast schedules and bear imbalance responsibility on its own. An aggregator combines dozens of such facilities and enters the market on behalf of the whole group:

  • prepares forecasts and hourly schedules for each facility and for the group as a whole;
  • sells and buys electricity via BC, DAM and IDM;
  • acts as the group's balance responsible party and assumes its imbalances;
  • offers the group's flexibility on the balancing market and the ancillary services market;
  • distributes revenue among participants using a transparent formula set out in the agreement.

Group participants

Who we connect

An aggregated group can combine different types of electrical installations. It is their combination that delivers the greatest portfolio effect.

Solar and wind plants

Selling electricity on the market with balance responsibility transferred to the aggregator. Weather-driven deviations are offset by other group participants.

Energy storage systems

DAM/IDM price arbitrage, balancing market participation and, after passing TSO testing, the ancillary services market.

CHP and gas engine units

Operation during peak-price hours, flexible grid export, provision of capacity reserves.

Industrial consumers

Demand response: temporary reduction of electricity offtake on aggregator command — and revenue for the flexibility provided.

Hybrid facilities

SPP + ESS, gas engine + ESS, microgrids: joint operation optimized for market prices and own needs.

Active consumers

Consumers with their own generation or storage that can both draw electricity from the grid and export it.

Operating cycle

How the aggregated group works every day

From forecast to settlement — every stage is automated and transparent for the participant.

D-2

Forecast

Collection of telemetry and metering data; weather, generation and consumption forecasts; equipment availability; ESS state of charge.

D-1

Planning and trading

Portfolio optimization, DAM bids, hourly schedules for each facility, schedule notifications to the TSO.

D-0

Dispatch

IDM adjustments, execution of TSO commands on the balancing market, control of ESS, generation and load.

₴

Settlements

Plan-versus-actual reconciliation based on commercial metering data, imbalance calculation and revenue distribution among group participants.

Participant benefits

Why joining the group pays off

  • Lower imbalance costs. Participants' deviations offset each other, and the aggregator bears balance responsibility for the group.
  • Access to all market segments without an in-house trading desk, license or financial guarantees.
  • Revenue from flexibility of ESS, CHP and controllable load on the BM and the ancillary services market.
  • Transparency: hourly plan-versus-actual reports and a clear revenue-sharing formula in the agreement.
  • Technology support for facility monitoring and control together with our partner ALTEN NEO LLC.
Facility requirements

What you need to join

  • the electrical installation is connected to the DSO/TSO grid and has an EIC code for its commercial metering point;
  • hourly commercial metering with data transmitted to the metering administrator;
  • for the balancing market and the ancillary services market — remote control and telemetry equipment and successful TSO testing;
  • a signed aggregated group participation agreement with GS-TRADING LLC.

Specific requirements depend on the facility type and the market segments it will operate in. We will help you through every stage.

Monitoring, control and equipment

Together with our technology partner ALTEN NEO LLC, we provide monitoring and control of group participants' energy facilities, prepare assets for operation in the aggregated group, and procure high-tech equipment — ESS, mobile power centers and control systems.
